Review:

The soundbar that does everything well to an exceptional standard is the Samsung HW Q990B, it has amazing surround-sound performance, vocal reproduction, and room correction capabilities.

The reason why the Q990B stands out the most is for its surround sound, it has 11 main channel speakers, and the center firing speakers are helpful in vocal reproduction for TV shows, and movies.

Personally, I find it difficult to understand vocals in certain TV shows, so the Q990B is able to fix this solution by improving the overall clarity, and loudness of the voices.

Immersiveness is another big thing I tend to focus on when selecting a soundbar, the Q990Bs subwoofer is great at reproducing low-frequency noises for a deep, rumbly experience. This is important for action movies and watching music.

Now that we’ve got the amazing performance out of the way, the actual physicality of the soundbar matches the set parameters we’ve set for the LG CX 55 inch.

The Q990B is 48 inches which means it will be slightly larger than the 47.9 inch width of the LG CX 55 inch. This is as close as you can get to matching a soundbar to the width of your display.

Now that we’ve established the pros of the Q990B, it’s time to talk about the downsides, the Q990B doesn’t support Chromecast which will limit streaming potential, but isn’t; a huge deal.

Also, the 4K video passthrough doesn’t support Dolby Vision

Alternatively: For a soundbar that supports Chromecast the LG S95QR is your best deal, it’s slightly smaller than the LG CX 55 inch coming in at 47.2 inches, so it may be more physically appealing too.

2. Samsung HW-Q950A | Best Q990B Alternative For LG CX 55 Inch

  • Streaming Support: AirPlay, Spotify
  • Virtual Assistant: Alexa
  • Audio Support: Dolby ATMOS, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby MAT (*ATMOS Music)

Reasons To Buy:

  • Impressive room correction capabilities
  • Bass is suitable for watching movies
  • Decent Atmos support
  • More affordable compared to Q990B

Reasons To Avoid:

  • No Chromecast support
  • Dolby Atmos cant be played via WIFI

Review:

Going back in time, the Q950A is a high-end soundbar that was eventually replaced by the Q990B for very specific reasons.

The Q950A is a soundbar aimed to provide the best surround-sound experience, this is evident with its high end Dolby Atmos support, satellite speakers, and the number of channels it has.

The Q950A also has a room correcting feature which helps in adjusting the soundbar to specific rooms. This will ultimately provide the best listening experience based on your room.

The subwoofer performs just as well as the Q990Bs, but the design is slightly different, and the satellite speakers are also different in terms of design. We’d have to say just by looking at it, that the Q950A’s design is slightly older looking compared to the Q990B.

Physically, the Q950A should fit really well with the LG CX 55 inch, this is because the two widths are pretty similar. The Q950A is only 0.5 inches wider, so the difference is minimal.

The Q950A is still a competent soundbar, but it lacks in Wifi support as it cannot support Dolby Atmos over Wifi, this is where the Q990B beats it.

Alternatively: the Q990B would be a decent alternative if you’re looking for a slightly redesigned soundbar with Dolby Atmos over Wifi support.

However, if you’re looking for something a little different, then the Q950T is its predecessor, it has fewer main channel speakers (9.1.4), but it still provides a decent subwoofer.

3. Sony HT-A5000 | Decent Mid Tier Soundbar For LG CX 55

Sony A5000 for LG CX 55 inch tv

Specifications:

  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, HDMI, HDMI eArc, LAN (RJ-45), Optical, USB, WiFi
  • Surround-Sound Config: 5.1.2
  • Dimensions: 47.6″ x 2.8″ x 5.5″
  • Streaming Support: AirPlay, Chromecast, Spotify
  • Virtual Assistant: Alexa, Google
  • Audio Support: Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS 96/24, DTS Digital Surround, DTS-ES, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X

Reasons To Buy:

  • Voice Enhancing features
  • Decent room correction feature
  • Sleek looking design

Reasons To Avoid:

  • Poor surround-sound performance

Review:

The Sony HT-A5000 is a mid-tier soundbar whose channels are 5.1.2 configured. Although there aren’t many channels, and the surround-sound performance isn’t that great, there are still many features such as Sony Virtual surround engine to help improve surround-sound performance.

There’s also another feature called sound field optimization which is basically a room-correcting feature that is made to configure the Sony HT-A5000 to work best based on your room.

The Sony HT-A5000 is also great for TV shows as it focuses a lot of vocalization with its dialogue-enhancing features and ensures that the listener can hear dialogue as clearly as possible.

In terms of width, the Sony HT-A5000 is 47.6 inches in width which makes it 0.3 inches smaller than the 47.9 inches width of the LG CX 55 Inch display. This is the best you can get, slightly smaller is always more aesthetically pleasing.

A downside to the Sony HT-A5000 is its lack of bass for movies and its poor surround-sound performance. The lack of bass has a huge impact on how impactful action-type movies are, when you’re listening with the A5000, action scenes don’t feel as they should.

Alternatively: a better soundbar in terms of surround sound, dialogue reproduction, and Atmos performance would have to be the Sonos Arc. It will perform better in TV shows and movies, but you may have to purchase a subwoofer as it doesn’t come with one.

But if you’re looking for a soundbar that comes with a subwoofer, then you could pick up Q800B. It’s also a 5.1.2 soundbar, just better in most aspects.

4. Sonos ARC | Mid-High End Soundbar For LG CX 55 Inch

Sonos arc for LG CX 55 inch tv

Specifications:

  • Connectivity: HDMI eArc, LAN (RJ-45), Optical, WiFi
  • Surround-Sound Config: 5.0.2
  • Dimensions: 48.5″ x 2.7″ x 5.4″
  • Streaming Support: AirPlay, Apple Music. Google Play Music, Sonos App, Spotify, Tidal
  • Virtual Assistant: Alexa, Google
  • Audio Support: Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD

Reasons To Buy:

  • Great dialogue enhancing
  • Extended Atmos support
  • Decent surround-sound performance
  • Premium design

Reasons To Avoid:

  • No HDMI IN

Review:

Overall, the Sonos ARC is a great mid to high end soundbar as it’s got amazing multipurpose capabilities. Our favorite aspect about the Sonos ARC is its decent stereo soundstage which makes the soundbar feel like it’s penetrating every corner of the room.

The room correcting capabilities are pretty good, you’re able to get it on your IOS device, but it may not be available on Android.

The Sonos ARC dialogue capabilities are pretty impressive, when used, voices are reproduced to be clear and high quality. For me, dialogue capabilities are one of the most important features of a soundbar because it helps me understand and keep up with TV shows and movies accurately.

As for the design, it’s one of the better looking soundbars on the list, it’s sleek and durable making it aesthetically pleasing. Also, the width of the Sonos ARC fits perfectly within our set parameters for the LG CX 55 inch, it’s slightly smaller so that’s a huge plus

One potential downside to the Sonos ARC is that it has no HDMI IN which is a huge turn off for some individuals. Also, the room correcting capabilities are only exclusive to IOS making it unavailable to a large portion of users.

Alternatively: you may prefer the Sony HT-ST5000 over the Sonos ARC for its dedicated subwoofer, HDMI ports decent dialogue reproduction, and Atmos performance. However, the Sonos ARC is better for surround-sound, and it has a better soundstage.

5. LG SP9YA | Best Soundbar For Watching TV Shows

SP9YA for LG CX 55 INCH
Credit: LG

Specifications:

  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, HDMI, HDMI, HDMI eArc, Optical, USB, WiFi
  • Surround-Sound Config: 5.1.2
  • Dimensions: 48.1 x 2.3 x 5.8″
  • Streaming Support: AirPlay, Chromecast, Spotify
  • Virtual Assistant: None Built In
  • Audio Support: Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS Digital Surround, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X

Reasons To Buy:

  • Decent Bass
  • Gets loud
  • Dialogue enhancing features

Reasons To Avoid:

  • Surround-sound could be better

Review:

For TV shows, the SP9YA is one of the best soundbars because of its dialogue reproduction, it can easily correct muffled voices and speech which is a huge benefit for people that struggle to grasp voices in TV shows.

The way it does this is by utilizing the center channel speakers to correct quiet voices, then the muffled voices are fixed by the dialogue enhancement features for a more crisp and clear-sounding delivery.

For movies, the dialogue clarity is a huge benefit too, but where the SN9YA shines the most in terms of movies is with its bass adjustments which are able to enhance the immersiveness of action-packed movies.

Also, the SP9YA surround-sound capabilities are okay, the upfiring speakers enhance Dolby atmos and DTS:X height cues by allowing audio to bounce off the ceiling, this is obviously a huge benefit in terms of saving money because you don’t have to buy physical ceiling speakers.

Physically, the width is 48 inches which means the soundbar is slightly larger than the LG CX 55 inch in terms of width, but it shouldn’t be a big deal considering it’s a minimal difference between the two.

One downside to the LG SP9YA is its surround-sound performance, while it’s okay to a certain extent, and it exceeds your standard TV speakers, it’s just underwhelming once you compare it to a high end soundbar or an actual surround-sound setup.

Alternatively: you may prefer the Vizio elevate over the SP9YA, it has a wide soundstage which allows the users to pinpoint what’s going on in the movie, also, the surround-sound content is decent with its rotating sides.

How To Pick A Soundbar For LG CX 55 Inch?

The LG CX 55 is a high end OLED display with a resolution of 4K (3,840 x 2,160), so pairing a decent soundbar with this display is only right.

For the LG CX 55, we want to focus on soundbars that are physically compatible, so they must be close to 40-50 inches and obviously be better than the standard speakers that come with the TV.

In this case, we’ve focused more on soundbars that are perceived as high end, for example, they feature plenty of audio channels for enhanced surround sound.

Should My Soundbar Have Bluetooth?

A soundbar that supports Bluetooth makes it significantly easier to connect devices such as your smartphone, this is so you can remotely control the audio of your soundbar.

The LG CX 55-inch supports Bluetooth audio, which means you can connect your display to the soundbar without the need for a cable. Connecting without a cable looks cleaner, but you may miss key performance features.

This is why it’s recommended to use an HDMI cable or an optical cable if you prioritize performance over aesthetics, sometimes Bluetooth just doesn’t cut it.

Is Soundbar Surround-Sound Important For LG CX 55?

When purchasing a soundbar, you should always consider the surround-sound capabilities, this is so when you intend on watching movies, they’re actually immersive with the sound coming from every angle.

Generally, the more channels a soundbar has, the better the surround-sound capabilities are, and their ability to reproduce Dolby Atmos, or DTS content is greatly improved.

Surround Sound Formats

  • Dolby Atmos – Supports height with upwards firing drivers.
  • DTS – Alternative to Dolby Digital
  • Dolby Digital – Contains up to 6 discrete audio channels.
  • DTS:X – Supports upwards firing drivers for height sound effects

A good Soundbar will support multiple surround-sound formats for maximum compatibility, if the LG CX 55″ doesn’t support any of these formats, then the soundbar can add this support.

The 4 most important surround-sound formats are Dolby Atmos, DTS, Dolby Digital, and DTS:X, and there are some interesting differences between them.

Most content will use one of these audio formats, Netflix & Disney+ supports Dolby Atmos and Amazon prime uses Dolby Digital.

It’s worth noting that not all content on these streaming platforms will support these audio formats.

How To Connect Soundbar To LG CX 55 Inch?

There are a few ways you can connect your soundbar to your display, the easiest way is to use an optical cable. The optical cable connects to the output of the display and inputs data into the soundbar.

The downside to using an optical cable is that it does not support Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, or Dolby TrueHD.

The best-wired alternative would be to use HDMI, the audio transmitted is higher in quality compared to optical, and it supports surround-sound formats such as Dolby Atmos.

HDMI Video & Audio Passthrough

HDMI passthrough is when audio and video are transmitted from a source to a soundbar or a home theater system.

If your soundbar has HDMI passthrough support, it should have one HDMI IN port to receive audio and video from the input device, and one OUT port to send the signal to the TV, in this case, the LG CX 55-inch.

Just ensure that your soundbar supports HDMI eARC, and use eARC-supported cables so everything runs smoothly.

Subwoofer

Soundbars should come with subwoofers which are a type of loudspeaker, and the job of a subwoofer is to reproduce low-pitched frequencies such as bass.

Subwoofers are extremely important for movies, this is because movies such as action films utilize low-frequency noises.

And when a subwoofer is used correctly, it will actually enhance the immersiveness of your home theater setup, this will make movies far more memorable.

Furthermore, if you’re into music, then a subwoofer can also be a huge benefit, but some subwoofers that come with soundbars can be overpowering, so make sure you select carefully.

Satellite Wireless Speakers

Some soundbars will come with additional speakers which you can place at the rear side of the listening area, or on the side.

Satellite speakers are amazing at improving the surround-sound experience because they are able to naturally create this experience. Soundbars without satellite speakers will try to simulate or imitate this experience.

Dialogue/Voice Enhancing Features

Certain soundbars have a feature that enhances the voice/dialogue of whatever content is being viewed. This is particularly important if you’re watching a TV show where voices can be hard to distinguish from the background noise.

The additional clarity helps the viewer grasp what’s actually going on in the movie/TV show, this feature is really beneficial to those that have a hard time hearing.

Conclusion – What’s The Best Soundbar For LG CX 55 Inch?

Performance-wise, the Samsung HW-Q990B is the best-performing, and it’s arguably the best Dolby Atmos soundbar you can buy. I’d recommend the Q990B if you’re serious about your home theater setup, or you’re an audiophile looking for the best.

The Sonos ARC is a great mid to high-tier option if you’re looking for a soundbar with decent surround sound/Atmos performance, also it’s considerably more affordable than the higher-end options on this list.
